It was no easy way to realize how the Catholic Church would be involved in the great commemoration of the Reformation in in 2017. But now the matter is decided – and the result is very good. There are not only several large joint events, including our joint ecumenical festival organized on 16th September, 2017 in Bochum, with the participation of laymen and church leaders. What is most important is that we succeeded in entering a common process of “healing the memory”. Thus, 2017 – the very successful joint journey of the German Conference of Bishops and Council of the EKD to the Holy Land has shown it – can also become a further step in the history of ecumenical apprenticeship. The common declaration of the churches “Healing Remembrance – witnessing Jesus Christ” describes where we come from and where we want to go.
The celebrationn of the 500 years in the light of the common loyalty to the Gospel is intended to strengthen the ecumenical relationship that has grown over the last decades. In Germany, the two Ecumenical Church Days in 2003 and 2010 were certainly special stages of this journey, as have been in Europe the three European Ecumenical Assemblies in 1989, 1997 and 2007. The Reformation Jubilee is to be celebrated together as a celebration of Christ – because we want to share a credible testimony for Jesus Christ.
The 500th celebration is an impressive occasion. We rejoyce with our evangelical sisters and brothers for the enormous public attention we already know for Church days and Catholic Days, and also, in the catholic field, for Pope visits and the World Youth Day. We rejoyce for this important year with its many steps – and the exhortation is that as much as possible and in as many as possible, we are present: now it begins!

Non è stato facile arrivare a chiarire come la Chiesa cattolica avrebbe partecipato alla grande commemorazione della Riforma nel 2017. Ma ora la cosa è stata definita e il risultato è ottimo. Non solo ci sono molte importanti iniziative congiunte, tra cui il Festival ecumenico comune che si terrà a Bochum il prossimo 16 settembre 2017, a cui parteciperanno insieme i laici e i responsabili delle Chiese. È importante soprattutto il fatto che si sia riusciti a cominciare un comune processo di “guarigione delle memorie”. Così il 2017, come ha mostrato il viaggio molto efficace in Terra Santa compiuto da alcuni membri della Conferenza episcopale tedesca e del Consiglio della Chiesa evangelica in Germania, potrà diventare un ulteriore passo nella storia dell’apprendimento ecumenico. La dichiarazione comune delle Chiese “Guarire le memorie, testimoniare Gesù Cristo” descrive da dove arriviamo e verso dove vogliamo andare.
La celebrazione dei 500 anni dovrà, alla luce della comune fedeltà al Vangelo, rafforzare chiaramente il legame ecumenico che è cresciuto negli ultimi decenni. In Germania i Kirchentag ecumenici del 2003 e del 2010 sono state tappe speciali in questo cammino, come in Europa lo sono state le tre assemblee ecumeniche europee del 1989, 1997 e del 2007. Il giubileo della Riforma dovrà essere celebrato insieme come Festa del Cristo, perché vogliamo insieme dare una testimonianza più credibile di Gesù Cristo.
Il 500° è un’occasione imponente. Ci rallegriamo con i nostri fratelli e sorelle evangelici per la enorme rilevanza e attenzione pubblica che noi già conosciamo per i Kirchentag o per i Katholikentag, o in ambito cattolico per le visite del Papa o le Giornate mondiali della gioventù. Siamo lieti per quest’anno importante con tutte le sue tante tappe. Noi ci siamo: ora si comincia!

Reformation 500: Jetzt geht‘s los!
Es war kein leichter Weg, bis klar war, wie sich die katholische Kirche am großen Reformationsgedenken im kommenden Jahr 2017 beteiligt. Aber nun ist die Sache entschieden – und das Ergebnis ist sehr gut. Es gibt nicht nur mehrere große gemeinsame Veranstaltungen, darunter unser gemeinsames von Laien und Kirchenleitungen veranstaltetes Ökumenisches Fest am 16. September 2017 in Bochum. Wichtig ist vor allem, dass es gelungen ist, in einen gemeinsamen Prozess der “Heilung der Erinnerung” einzutreten. So kann 2017 – die sehr gelungene gemeinsame Reise von Bischofskonferenz und Rat der EKD in das Heilige Land hat es gezeigt – auch zu einem weiteren Schritt in der Geschichte des ökumenischen Lernens werden. Das gemeinsame Wort der Kirchen “Erinnerung heilen – Jesus Christus bezeugen” beschreibt, woher wir kommen und wohin wir wollen.
Die 500-Jahr-Feier soll – unter der gemeinsamen Wahrnehmung des Evangeliums – ausdrücklich die ökumenische Verbundenheit stärken, die in den letzten Jahrzehnten gewachsen ist. In Deutschland waren die beiden Ökumenischen Kirchentage 2003 und 2010 sicher besondere Stationen dieses Weges, in Europa die drei Europäischen Ökumenischen Versammlungen 1989, 1997 und 2007. Das Reformationsjubiläum soll gemeinsam als Christusfest begangen werden – wir wollen gemeinsam glaubwürdiger Zeugnis für Jesus Christus geben.
500 – ein eindrucksvoller Anlass. Freuen wir uns mit unseren evangelischen Schwestern und Brüdern über enorme öffentliche Aufmerksamkeit, wie wir sie von Kirchentagen und Katholikentagen, katholischerseits auch von Papstbesuchen und Weltjugendtagen kennen. Freuen wir uns auf dieses gute Jahr mit seinen vielen Stationen – und sind wir möglichst oft und möglichst viel dabei: Jetzt geht‘s los!
