We are at the European elections countdown, at a political flashpoint, with clashing predictions of opposite signs: a part of the public opinion seeking to unravel the tangle of controversy while another part has clear ideas about the choice to be made.
As usual, there is part of the information aimed at making you think and there is part of the information which is sided, in order to make people side.
The thing is, however, that we are at the eve of the elections and the voters are at a crossroad between the end of a great idea and its changes.
Whatever the result will be, there is the hope that everything neither will suddenly stop nor will be utterly upset. The hope, similar to the one mentioned in an imagined letter by Robert Schuman to the journalist Sébastien Maillard, is that thinking about Europe anew and thinking Europe anew may become a true movement of the peoples: not the expression of the entanglements of the various governments’ positions or of a nationalistic and class selfishness.
What Europe needs is a strong cultural consciousness, a determined awareness – to be reinvigorated right from the day after the verdict of the polls – that the survival of an organisation, of an administration is not at stake, neither are the economic and commercial relations. What is at stake is the possibility for the people who are among those who have the oldest and strongest traditions and the richest and constructive experiences in social and cultural aggregations, to survive and give a determined contribution to peace, justice and solidarity: both in the old continent and in all the others.
Whatever the results will be, the support to the European conscience and citizenship is the first and foremost task also of catholic journalists.
The “Eurcom-Journalists for Europe” adventure, whose activities will be two months old on the day of the elections, is placed in this professional perspective, which is also interdenominational and sees the participation of the youth. Eurcom will continue to be a meeting space made by journalists for a European reflection about Europe, a space where worries, humbleness and competence give meaning to a job that for a Christian is shaped through freedom in belonging. In this apparent contradiction there is the “lay risk” that the Christian journalist runs and proposes expressing his faithfulness to God and to mankind in a professional way. At the core there is the persuasion that the Europe of the spirit – as card. Carlo Maria Martini called for, and lay people like Jacques Delors also did – is not something theoretical, is not an illusion, neither a means of escaping from reality and responsibility: it is the high-altitude of the thought and of the engagement that Christian concreteness shows to a Europe looking for itself.

Conto alla rovescia per le elezioni europee, dibattito politico incandescente, previsioni che si scontrano, una parte di opinione pubblica che cerca di districarsi nel groviglio delle polemiche mentre un’altra parte ha idee chiare sulla scelta da compiere.
Come sempre c’è un’informazione pensata per far pensare e c’è un’informazione schierata per far schierare.
Rimane il fatto che si è alla vigilia di un voto che vedrà l’elettore al bivio tra la fine e la metamorfosi di una grande idea.
L’auspicio, qualunque sarà l’esito, è che tutto non si fermi improvvisamente o venga irrimediabilmente stravolto. L’auspicio, che riprende quello accennato in una lettera immaginaria di Robert Schuman al giornalista Sébastien Maillard, è che il ripensare all’Europa e il ripensare l’Europa possano davvero diventare un movimento di popolo: non un’espressione dei bizantinismi delle posizioni dei vari governi oppure degli egoismi nazionalisti e di categoria.
Quello che serve all’Europa è una forte consapevolezza culturale, una forte presa di coscienza – da rilanciare fin dall’alba del giorno dopo il responso delle urne – che non è in gioco la sopravvivenza di un’organizzazione, di un’amministrazione e neppure la tenuta di rapporti economici e commerciali ma è in gioco la possibilità per popoli che sono tra quelli che hanno più antiche e radicate tradizioni e più ricche e costruttive esperienze di aggregazioni culturali e sociali , di sopravvivere e di dare un forte contributo alla pace, alla giustizia e alla solidarietà: nel vecchio continente e in tutti gli altri.
Il sostegno alla coscienza e alla cittadinanza europee, qualunque sarà l’esito del voto, non può che essere l’impegno prioritario e irrinunciabile dei giornalisti cristiani.
L’avventura di Eurcom – Giornalisti per l’Europa, che nel giorno del voto europeo compirà due mesi, si colloca in questa prospettiva professionale che è interconfessionale e vede la partecipazione dei giovani. Eurcom continuerà a essere un luogo d’incontro di un pensiero giornalistico sull’Europa, un luogo dove l’inquietudine, l’umiltà e la competenza sostanziano un mestiere che per il cristiano è fatto di libertà nell’appartenenza. In questa apparente contraddizione c’è il rischio laicale che il giornalista cristiano corre nell’esprimere professionalmente la sua fedeltà a Dio e all’uomo. Al fondo c’è la convinzione che l’Europa dello spirito – invocata dal card. Carlo Maria Martini ma anche da laici come Jacques Delors – non è un’astrattezza, non è un’illusione e neppure una fuga dalla realtà e dalla responsabilità: è l’alta quota del pensiero e dell’impegno che il realismo cristiano indica a un’Europa oggi alla ricerca di se stessa.

Ostatnie odliczanie przed wyborami do Parlamentu europejskiego: gorące polityczne debaty, sprzeczne prognozy, część opinii publicznej stara się przedrzeć przez gąszcz polemik, inni natomiast już mają jasną świadomość wyboru, którego zamierzają dokonać.
Jak zwykle, niektóre informacje podawane są po to, by skłonić do myślenia, inne, stronnicze – służą temu, by zyskać jak najwięcej zwolenników.
Pozostaje faktem, że jesteśmy w przededniu głosowania, które dla wyborców oznacza albo definitywny koniec pięknych ideałów, albo też ich radykalne przeistoczenie.
Niezależnie od tego, jaki będzie wynik wyborów, miejmy nadzieję, że Europa nie stanie nagle w miejscu, ani nie ulegnie nieodwracalnemu zniekształceniu. Miejmy nadzieję, że nastąpi powrót do owego wspomnianego w fikcyjnej korespondencji Roberta Schumanna z dziennikarzem Sébastien Maillard myślenia o Europie i myślenia europejskiego, które powinno stać się wielkim powszechnym ruchem a nie tylko wyrazem wyszukanych stanowisk poszczególnych rządów, egoizmu różnych grup zawodowych, czy narodów.
Europie potrzebna jest silna świadomość własnej kultury i tożsamości, pozwalająca już następnego dnia po wyborach wskazać, że nie chodzi o zachowanie struktur administracyjnych, ani nawet o utrzymanie relacji gospodarczych czy handlowych. Stawką jest bowiem przetrwanie narodów o najstarszych i najgłębiej zakorzenionych tradycjach, narodów naznaczonych najbogatszym i najbardziej twórczym doświadczeniem wspólnoty kulturowej i społecznej oraz ich wkład w sprawę pokoju, sprawiedliwości i solidarności na starym kontynencie i w całym świecie.
Niezależnie od wyników głosowania, niezbywalnym i najważniejszym zadaniem dziennikarzy chrześcijańskich jest wspierać kształtowanie świadomości i poczucia obywatelskiego Europejczyków.
Inicjatywa Eurcom – dziennikarze dla Europy, która zainicjowana na dwa miesiące przed wyborami europejskimi, należy do tego właśnie nurtu międzywyznaniowej dyskusji z udziałem i na rzecz młodych. Również więc i po wyborach do Parlamentu europejskiego Eurcom będzie stanowił forum wymiany myśli i idei europejskich, gdzie pokora i kompetencje cechują pracę, będącą wynikiem wolnego wyboru, dokonanego z pełną świadomością chrześcijańskiej przynależności. Ta pozorna tylko sprzeczność wyznacza bowiem ryzyko, na jakie naraża się każdy chrześcijański dziennikarz, pragnąc dać wyraz swojej wierności tak Bogu, jak i człowiekowi. Wszyscy jednak jesteśmy przekonani, że Europa, jakiej pragnął kard. Carlo Maria Martini, ale i Jacques Delors, nie jest iluzją ani ucieczką od rzeczywistości, lecz celem który wynika z chrześcijańskiego realizmu.

Compte à rebours pour les élections européennes: le débat politique est incandescent, des prévisions opposées s’affrontent, une partie de l’opinion publique essaye de se démêler dans l’enchevêtrement des polémiques, alors qu’une autre a les idées plus claires quant au choix à faire.
Comme d’habitude, il y a une information qui vise à informer et il y a une autre qui vise à aligner.
Le fait demeure que nous sommes à la veille d’un vote qui portera l’électeur au carrefour, entre la fin d’une grande idée et sa métamorphose.
Quel que soit le résultat, on espère que rien ne s’arrête à l’improviste ou qu’il soit irrémédiablement changé. Pour reprendre la lettre imaginaire adressée par Robert Shuman au journaliste Sébastien Maillard, notre espoir c’est que la réflexion sur l’Europe puisse vraiment devenir un mouvement du peuple et non une manifestation des byzantinismes des oppositions des gouvernements ou des particularismes nationaux.
Ce dont l’Europe a besoin, c’est d’une forte conscience culturelle, une prise de conscience qu’il faudra relancer dès l’aube du jour suivant les élections : ce qui est en jeu ce n’est pas la survie d’une organisation ou d’une administration, et pas non plus la stabilité des rapports économiques et commerciaux, mais plutôt la possibilité pour des peuples parmi les plus anciens, et qui ont les expériences d’association culturelles et sociales les plus riches et constructives, de survivre et donner une forte contribution à la paix, à la justice et à la solidarité, dans le vieil continent et dans tous les autres.
Quel que soit le résultat, le soutien à la conscience et à la citoyenneté européenne doivent être aussi l’engagement prioritaire des journalistes catholiques.
La mission d’Eurcom – Journalistes pour l’Europe, qui fêtera, le jour du vote, ses deux premiers mois de vie, trouve son but dans cette prospective professionnelle, qui est interconfessionnelle et qui profite de la participation des jeunes. Eurcom sera toujours un lieu de rencontre pour la pensée journalistique sur l’Europe, un lieu où l’inquiétude, l’humilité et la compétence donnent la substance d’une profession qui, pour le chrétien, est liberté dans l’appartenance. Dans cette apparente contradiction, il y a le risque très laïque que le journaliste catholique cours lorsque il exprime d’une manière professionnelle sa fidélité à Dieu et à l’homme. Au fond il y à la conviction que l’Europe de l’esprit – évoqué par le cardinal Carlo Maria Martini mais aussi par des laïcs comme Jacques Delors – n’est pas une illusion et pas non plus une fuite de la réalité et des responsabilités: elle est la plus haute destination de la pensée et de l’engagement que le réalisme chrétien marque pour une Europe à la recherche d’elle-même.

Countdown für die Europawahlen, heftige politische Debatte, entgegengesetzte Vorhersagen, die aufeinander prallen, ein Teil der öffentlichen Meinung, der versucht, sich dem Gewirr der Polemiken zu entziehen, während ein anderer Teil klare Vorstellungen über die zu treffenden Entscheidung hat.
Wie immer gibt es eine Information, die dazu gedacht ist, zum Denken anzuregen, und eine Information, die Partei nimmt, um zur Parteinahme zu veranlassen.
Es bleibt die Tatsache, dass man vor einer Abstimmung steht, die den Wähler vor die Entscheidung zwischen dem Ende einer großen Idee und ihrer Metamorphose stellt.
Wie immer die Wahlen ausgehen, wünschenswert ist, dass nicht alles plötzlich eingebremst oder irreparabel entstellt wird. Der Wunsch – der eine Idee aus einem imaginären Brief von Robert Schuman an den Journalisten Sébastien Maillard aufnimmt – geht dahin, dass das Denken an Europa und das Neudenken Europas tatsächlich eine Volksbewegung wird: nicht ein Ausdruck der Byzantinismen der Positionen der verschiedenen Regierungen oder der nationalistischen oder kategorialen Egoismen.
Was Europa braucht, ist ein starkes kulturelles Bewusstsein, ein starkes Bewusstsein (und das vom Morgen des Tages nach der Antwort der Wahlurnen an), dass es nicht um das Überleben einer Organisation, einer Verwaltung und nicht einmal um die Aufrechterhaltung der Wirtschafts- und Handelsbeziehungen geht, sondern dass für Völker, die zu jenen mit den ältesten und am tiefsten verwurzelten Traditionen zählen, die Möglichkeit auf dem Spiel steht, die Erfahrung der europäischen Einheit als eine einmalige Gelegenheit zu leben, einen starken Beitrag für Frieden, Gerechtigkeit und Solidarität zu leisten: auf dem alten Kontinent und auf allen anderen Kontinenten.
Was auch immer das Ergebnis der Wahl sein wird , die Unterstützung für das europäische Bewusstsein und die europäische Bürgerschaft muss eine vorrangige und unverzichtbare Aufgabe auch der christlichen Journalisten sein.
Das Experiment von „Eurcom – Journalisten für Europa“, das am Tag der Europawahlen auf zwei Monate der Aktivität zurückblickt, erfolgt in dieser professionellen Perspektive, die interkonfessionell ist und sich der Beteiligung junger Menschen erfreut. Eurcom bleibt ein Ort der Begegnung für das journalistische Denken über Europa, ein Ort, wo Unruhe, Bescheidenheit und Kompetenz einen Beruf auszeichnen, der für den Christen Zugehörigkeit in Freiheit bedeutet. Dieser scheinbare Widerspruch ist das Risiko des Laien, das der christliche Journalist eingeht und vorschlägt, indem er seine Treue zu Gott und zum Menschen in professioneller Weise ausdrückt. Im Grunde geht es um die Überzeugung, dass das – von Kardinal Carlo Maria Martini, aber auch von säkularen Persönlichkeiten wie Jacques Delors – beschworene Europa des Geistes nicht abstrakt ist, keine Illusion und auch keine Flucht aus der Realität und der Verantwortung: Es ist vielmehr der Höhenflug des Denkens und des Engagements, auf den der christliche Realismus ein Europa hinweist, das auf der Suche nach sich selbst ist.
