A further step towards unity

Having received the news of the forthcoming meeting between His Holiness Pope Francis and His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and of All Russia, the president of Ccee (Council of Catholic Bishops’ Conferences of Europe), cardinal Péter Erdő, wanted to express his joy at this historic meeting by sending a letter to Patriarch Kirill.
The text of the letter is as follows: 

Your Holiness,

With great joy I have received the news of the forthcoming meeting, by the grace of God, between His Holiness Pope Francis and Your Holiness, on 12 February at Cuba’s José Martí International Airport, a meeting that will conclude with the signing of a joint declaration.

This historical meeting, which thus  happily seals years of dialogue between the Holy See and the Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church, is also a source of comfort to CCEE in its decision to enter into that dialogue. Along with Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, President of the Patriarchate of Moscow’s Department of External Church Relations, we have collaborated a great deal in the creation and realisation of the European Catholic-Orthodox Forum, an ecclesial body aimed at promoting better pastoral collaboration between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches in Europe, with preparations for the fifth Forum already underway.

The Church in Europe is looking to this event as a further step towards unity and the joint witness of Christians. Therefore, I implore the Lord’s blessing on this meeting, that it may have a fruitful outcome, and I assure you of my prayers for this important step towards the unity of the Church and especially for the Russian Orthodox Church.

Your Holiness, on behalf of the Council of European Episcopal Conferences I assure you of the prayers of the Catholic Church in Europe and that we will be following with great interest and joy your meeting with Pope Francis.

Appresa la notizia del prossimo incontro tra Sua Santità Papa Francesco e Sua Santità il Patriarca Kirill di Mosca e di tutta la Russia, il Cardinale Péter Erdő, presidente del Ccee (Consiglio delle Conferenze episcopali europee) ha voluto testimoniare la sua gioia per questo storico incontro inviando una lettera al Patriarca Kirill.
Di seguito, il contenuto della lettera:

Santità,

E’ con grande gioia che ho appreso la notizia del prossimo incontro, per grazia di Dio, tra Sua Santità Papa Francesco e Vostra Santità, il prossimo 12 febbraio presso l’aeroporto internazionale José Martí di Cuba, incontro che si concluderà con la firma di una dichiarazione comune.

Questo storico incontro, che viene così a suggellare felicemente decenni di dialogo tra la Santa Sede e il Patriarcato della Chiesa Ortodossa Russa, conforta anche il CCEE nella scelta di investirsi in questo dialogo. Insieme al Metropolita Hilarion di Volokolamsk, Presidente del Dipartimento per le relazioni ecclesiastiche esterne del Patriarcato di Mosca, abbiamo molto collaborato per la creazione e la realizzazione del Forum Europeo Cattolico Ortodosso, istanza ecclesiale volta a promuovere una migliore collaborazione pastorale tra la Chiesa Cattolica e le Chiese Ortodosse in Europa, e di cui è già in preparazione la 5 edizione.

La Chiesa in Europa guarda questo evento come un ulteriore passo compiuto per l’unità e per la comune testimonianza dei cristiani. Invoco pertanto la benedizione del Signore sull’incontro, il suo buon esito, e assicuro la mia preghiera per questo importante passo verso l’unità della Chiesa e in modo particolare per la Chiesa Ortodossa Russa.

Santità, a nome del Consiglio delle Conferenze Episcopali d’Europa assicuro la preghiera della Chiesa Cattolica in Europa e seguiremo con immenso interesse e gioia il Vostro incontro con Papa Francesco.
