An epochal change is urgently needed

“The latest, umpteenth tragedy at sea occurred in the Sicilian Channel, which is worsening by the hour – according to a press release issued recently by the Scalabrinian Missionaries – harshly shows how Europe, an increasingly crumbling fortress, on the one hand shows itself as a champion of fundamental human rights, then also towards migrants and refugees, but on the other does not contribute effectively to the opening of legal channels for migration, as various voices have been crying out for too long”.

“Those who live on the edge, in the suburbs, with a language dear to the Holy Father, no longer remain to look at their lives dissolving between abuse and continuous violations and make desperate choices – underlines Father Alexander Gazzola, superior general of the Scalabrinian Congregation – but also risk the impossible just to live, or rather to survive, because the alternative is too often death”.

“The inadequacy of remedies, as well as the Triton Operation is tragically showing to those committed, in the Church, on the migrants and refugees’ side, requires an ‘epochal’ change in the global management of immigration in the European Union – continues Father Gazzola –. The good accomplished with previous programmes, such as Mare Nostrum, with the rescue of more than 100,000 people, is unfortunately frustrated by the recent tragic events”.

For this the Scalabrinian Missionaries ask with renewed insistence a definitive stance of EU governments on migration in order to achieve a single European policy on the reception system, the recognition of refugee status, along with investments in the countries of origin of this mass of people.

“L’ultima ed ennesima tragedia del mare avvenuta nel Canale di Sicilia, che si aggrava di ora in ora – si legge in un comunicato stampa diffuso in questi giorni dai Missionari Scalabriniani – mostra impietosamente come l’Europa, fortezza sempre più sgretolata, da un lato si faccia paladina di diritti umani fondamentali, quindi anche nei confronti di migranti e rifugiati, ma dall’altro lato non contribuisca efficacemente all’apertura di canali legali di migrazione, così come varie voci gridano ormai da troppo tempo”.

“Chi vive ai margini, nelle periferie, con un linguaggio caro al Santo Padre, non rimane più a guardare la propria vita dissolversi tra soprusi e violazioni continue e compie scelte disperate – sottolinea p. Alessandro Gazzola, superiore generale della Congregazione Scalabriniana – ma rischia anche l’impossibile pur di vivere, anzi di sopravvivere, visto che l’alternativa è troppo spesso la morte”.

“L’inadeguatezza dei rimedi, come anche l’operazione Triton tragicamente sta mostrando a chi nella Chiesa è impegnato al fianco dei migranti e dei rifugiati, esige un cambio ‘epocale’ di gestione globale dell’immigrazione dell’Unione Europea – continua p. Gazzola –. Il bene compiuto con precedenti programmi, come Mare Nostrum, con il salvataggio di oltre 100.000 persone, appare purtroppo quasi vanificato dai fatti luttuosi recenti”.

Per questo i Missionari Scalabriniani chiedono con rinnovata insistenza una definitiva presa di posizione dei governi dell’Unione Europea sul tema migratorio, in modo da giungere a una politica unica europea sul sistema di accoglienza, sul riconoscimento dello status di rifugiato, assieme ad investimenti nei paesi di provenienza di questa massa di persone.
