The European Conference of Justice & Peace Commissions will meet from the 3rd to the 7th of October in Athens and Corinth (Greece) for their annual International Workshop and General Assembly. The general theme of the meeting is “Human Dignity and Economic Crisis”. During the General Assembly, Archbishop Jean-Claude Hollerich from Luxemburg will take over from Bishop William Kenney, auxiliary bishop from Birmingham, as President of Justice and Peace Europe. 22 of the 30 European JP commissions will be represented in Athens. The event is organised in close cooperation with the Justice and Peace Commission of the Catholic Church in Greece.
The opening conference of the International Workshop to be held in Athens will be given by Prof. Vassilis Karydis, the Greek deputy ombudsman. Furthermore the program includes a visit to a detention camp for migrants, encounters with unemployed and homeless people and discussions with representatives of political parties. A symbolic action is planned on the Areios Pagos hill, where St. Paul gave a sermon to the Athenians.
The General Assembly of Justice and Peace Europe, which follows on the International Workshop, will be held in Corinth. It will see the transition of the presidency of the European Conference of Justice and Peace Commissions. Archbishop Jean-Claude Hollerich from Luxemburg has been elected for a three years term starting in October 2014. In Corinth, he will take over from Bishop William Kenney, auxiliary bishop from Birmingham.
During the General Assembly delegates will evaluate the new cooperation with the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the EU (COMECE) which officially started at the beginning of the year. Furthermore, they will discuss the mission of Justice and Peace commissions fifty years after the publication of Gaudium et Spes, the pastoral constitution of the Vatican II which mentioned for the first time “that an organism of the universal Church be set up in order that both the justice and love of Christ toward the poor might be developed everywhere”. Delegates will also receive reports from the Council of Europe and the European Union. The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace will be represented at the General Assembly.
Justice and Peace Europe, the European Conference of Justice and Peace Commissions is the alliance of 31 Justice and Peace Commissions in Europe, working for the promotion of justice, peace and respect for human dignity. La conferenza europea delle Commissioni Giustizia e Pace si incontrerà dal 3 al 7 ottobre ad Atene e Corinto (Grecia) per l’annuale workshop internazionale e per l’Assemblea generale. Il tema generale dell’incontro è “La dignità umana e la crisi economica”. Durante l’Assemblea generale l’arcivescovo lussemburghese Jean-Claude Hollerich assumerà la carica di presidente di Giustizia e Pace Europa, prendendo il posto del vescovo William Kenney, ausiliare di Birmingham. Ad Atene saranno rappresentate 22 delle 30 Commissioni europee Giustizia e Pace. L’evento è organizzato in stretta cooperazione con la Commissione Giustizia e Pace della Chiesa cattolica di Grecia.
La conferenza d’apertura del workshop internazionale che si terrà ad Atene sarà tenuta dal prof. Vassilis Karydis, deputato difensore civico greco. Il programma include inoltre una visita a un campo di detenzione per migranti, incontri con disoccupati e senzatetto e discussioni con rappresentanti di partiti politici. È anche prevista un’azione simbolica sulla collina dell’Areopago, dove san Paolo tenne un discorso agli ateniesi.
L’Assemblea generale di Giustizia e Pace Europa, che segue il workshop internazionale, si terrà invece a Corinto e vedrà il passaggio della presidenza della Conferenza europea delle Commissioni Giustizia e Pace.
L’arcivescovo Jean‐Claude Hollerich del Lussemburgo è stato eletto per un periodo di tre anni con inizio ad ottobre 2014. A Corinto prenderà il posto del vescovo William Kenney, ausiliare di Birmingham.
Durante l’Assemblea Generale i delegati valuteranno la nuova cooperazione con la Commissione delle Conferenze episcopali della Comunità Europea (COMECE), che è iniziata ufficialmente all’inizio dell’anno. Inoltre discuteranno della missione delle Commissioni Giustizia e Pace cinquant’anni dopo la pubblicazione della Gaudium et Spes, la costituzione pastorale del Vaticano II che ha citato per la prima volta il fatto che “venga fondato un organismo della Chiesa universale per far sì che la giustizia e l’amore di Cristo verso i poveri si possa sviluppare ovunque”. I delegati riceveranno anche relazioni da parte del Consiglio d’Europa e dell’Unione Europea. Sarà rappresentato all’Assemblea generale il Consiglio Pontificio per la Giustizia e la Pace.
Giustizia e Pace Europa, la Conferenza Europea delle Commissioni Giustizia e Pace, è l’alleanza di 31 Commissioni che lavorano per la promozione di giustizia, pace e rispetto per la dignità umana. Giustizia e Pace Europa contribuisce ad aumentare la coscienza della dottrina sociale cattolica nelle società europee e le istituzioni europee. Il segretariato generale ha sede a Bruxelles.
