With ten commandments in the hemicycle

The new Parliament, elected on May this year, is preparing to face the great cultural, social, economic and political challenges. The responses coming from the hemicycle will determine the future of the European Union. Edoardo Zin, vice-president of the Saint-Benoît Institute (www.robert-schuman.com) which promoted the cause for the beatification of Robert Schuman, now in its ‘Vatican’ stage, wrote this “Decalogue of the MEP”. A commitment to Europe articulated in ten commandments.

I. THOU SHALL NOT IDOLIZE POLITICS

Always act in a spirit of service, without being servile. If politics is meaningful for you, make it be meaningful also for your colleagues and your voters.

II. THOU SHALL WORK FOR THE COMMON GOOD

Do not look only to the good of your voters or your country, but to the good of Europe as a whole. It’s the “whole” that matters, not the detail. Europe is not identified with the euro. It is only a means to realise a project and make a dream come true.

III. THOU SHALL DEFEND THE WEAK

When you go on a mission with your Commission, do not settle for focusing on the major projects, but go visit inmates in a prison cell, or patients in a psychiatric ward or women in a shelter or the elderly in a nursing home or refugees in a camp or children in a primary school. Reality is bigger than ideas!

IV. THOU SHALL RESPECT YOUR OPPONENTS

Especially those in countries other than your own. Remember that virtues and vices are becoming increasingly “European”. Confine conflicts to ideas and do not turn them into a clash of conflicting interests and personalist positions.

V. THOU SHALL NOT TRUST MONEY

They will offer it to you in the form of “assistance”, “little help”, “token of gratitude” for your work. In Europe, the goddess of bribery has different names, but the meaning is always the same: misuse of the resources of European citizens.

VI. THOU SHALL NOT LIE TO YOUR VOTERS

Always tell them what you think, not what you think they’d like to hear from you!

VII. THOU SHALL NOT FEIGN VANITY

Your lifestyle bears witness to the ideals proclaimed in words, by addressing also risks and challenges. You will make sure that what you get is a real success and not just the result of an image.

VIII. CULTIVATE FRIENDSHIPS, NOT INTERESTS

Establish good relationships with your colleagues from all political groups and countries. In politics, friendship means dialogue and is deeply rooted in unity and diversity, unity in diversity and diversity in unity.

IX. THOU SHALL BE ALERT

Keep your eyes open: Do not let yourself be crushed by lobbies, bureaucracy, fawners, translators, and assistants. Read carefully all the documents, listen to all opinions, but ultimately decide with your conscience, perhaps, in the evening, in the silence of your hotel room.

X. THOU SHALL ACCEPT MEDIATION

No intermediation. Politics requires compromise, which does not mean jeopardy. A politician that does not conform to the dominant thought is the salt of earth, the yeast that makes the moral sense ferment and the jolt of awareness in those around him.

Il nuovo Parlamento europeo, uscito dalle elezioni del maggio scorso, si prepara ad affrontare grandi sfide culturali, sociali, economiche e politiche. Dalle risposte che verranno dall’emiciclo dipenderà il futuro dell’Unione europea. Edoardo Zin, vice presidente dell’Istituto Saint-Benoît (www.robert-schuman.com) che ha promosso la causa di beatificazione di Robert Schuman, giunta alla fase “vaticana”, ha scritto questo “decalogo del deputato europeo”. Un impegno per l’Europa da declinare in dieci verbi.

I. NON FARAI DELLA POLITICA UN IDOLO

Agisci sempre in spirito di servizio, senza tuttavia essere servile. Se la politica ha un senso per te, sforzati perché abbia un senso anche per i tuoi colleghi e i tuoi elettori.

II. TI ADOPERERAI PER IL BENE COMUNE

Non guardare al bene particolare dell’orticello privato del tuo elettorato o del tuo Paese, ma al bene di tutta l’Europa. È il “tutto” che conta, non il particolare. L’Europa non s’identifica con l’euro. Esso è solo un mezzo per raggiungere un progetto e realizzare un sogno.

III. DIFENDERAI I PIÙ DEBOLI

Quando andrai in missione con la tua Commissione, non accontentarti di visitare i grandi progetti, ma va a trovare i detenuti in una cella di prigione, o i degenti in un reparto psichiatrico o le donne in una casa-rifugio o gli anziani in un ricovero o i rifugiati in un centro di raccolta o i piccoli di una scuola primaria. La realtà è più grande delle idee!

IV. RISPETTERAI I TUOI AVVERSARI

Soprattutto quelli dei paesi diversi da tuo. Ricorda che vizi e virtù si stanno sempre più “europeizzando”. Conserva il conflitto sul piano delle idee e non trasformarlo in lotta di interesse contrapposti e di posizioni personalistiche.

V. DIFFIDERAI DEL DANARO

Te lo offriranno sotto forma di “contributo”, “piccolo aiuto”, “segno di riconoscenza” per il tuo lavoro. In Europa, la dea tangente ha diversi nomi, ma il significato è sempre lo stesso: uso distorto di risorse dei cittadini.

VI. NON MENTIRAI AI TUOI ELETTORI

Dirai loro sempre quello che pensi, non quello che pensi piacerebbe a loro sentirsi dire!

VII. NON OSTENTERAI LA VANITÀ

Con il tuo stile di vita testimonierai gli ideali che proclami a parole, affrontando anche il rischio e la sfida. Farai in modo che quello che ottieni sia un vero successo e non soltanto un prodotto di immagine.

VIII. COLTIVERAI L’AMICIZIA, NON GLI INTERESSI

Con i tuoi colleghi di ogni gruppo politico e di ogni Paese intreccia buoni rapporti. In politica l’amicizia è dialogo e suppone nel contempo unità e diversità, unione nella diversità e diversità nell’unione.

IX. DIMOSTRERAI DI ESSERE VIGILANTE

Tieni gli occhi aperti: non lasciarti schiacciare dalle lobbies, dalla burocrazia, dagli adulatori, dai traduttori, dagli assistenti. Leggi bene tutti i documenti, ascolta tutti i pareri, ma infine decidi con la tua coscienza, magari, la sera, nel silenzio della tua camera d’albergo.

X. ACCETTERAI LA MEDIAZIONE

Non l’intermediazione. La politica esige il compromesso, che non è compromissione. Il politico che non si conforma al pensiero dominante è il sale della terra, il lievito che fermenta il senso morale e il sussulto della coscienza in chi gli sta attorno.
